But of course, it's Bulldog weekend
Go figure, you'd think I would learn? No. Why? Because it's always a good weekend for us in Marshalltown.
Saturday was way too damn early but when it's only an hour + a little, much nicer to sleep in my own bed. It was cold and I had a run in the first pair of hose I tried on. 2nd set, no run until I put my finger through them. Reminder to self, need to buy some new hose! Finally found a useable set, me thinkest they were the Ms as they were fairly tight--that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Found skirt, and I dressed warm with a toasty sweater and shirt. What I did forget was my warm coat. Just a jacket.
So results? Cy BOW for another point--where are all the damn smooth collies?? Connor BOV. Cara the pem, BOB. Nothing in the groups-those were pretty bizarre on Saturday. Moose, okay, that's a totally seperate paragraph.
I jumped back in the obedience ring. No excuses, okay, I have a few. But no cardigans to show right now-everything is finished and not ready to special Pete or Charlie right now--actually there aren't great breed counts right now so just easier to leave them at home. Anyway, Moose needs 2 legs on his CD then he can officially find a home that wants to put his herding titles on him. I tried hard to get Liz to take him for a run at an agility title but no luck yet--I'm still working on it. The obedience building, warm. OMG, what luxuary it is to have a performance dog, I so forgot about that. I see more obedience in my future, at least the next 6 mos or so till cardigan babies ready to hit the ring.
I'm wandering here. So off to obedience Moose and I go. Just one day, want to really see where he's at and I had originally planned on showing Pete to Paula on Sunday, but I forgot to enter her. We waited and waited as the judge was easily running an hour behind. We were the last team out of 6 to go. Was I nervous, of course! You never know what Moose will do, especially when he has a crowd to entertain! Heel on lead, not half bad. As usual he heels wide. But he's consistent. I had a few tight leashes, again, I know its an issue with him and working on it, always working on it! Figure 8-duh, I have so not worked on those-eek. Okay, tight lead, no sit, but 2nd half much better. He had an "oh duh" moment and remember what we were doing. Stand for exam-perfect-love old show dogs! Then, our enemy, the off leash heel.
Now Moose has a decent off leash heel, but as Alec and Meredith mentioned outside the ring afterwards, he also goes a little space cadet on me and forgets I'm there. Start, good. First left turn, good. Halt, good(wide but sat). Then we lost it! Forward, right turn, he went to the moon. Halt-ear cocks back, checks in and he's like 6 feet from me, slightly ahead and the look on his face was "oh f***, I'm pretty certain I'm in deep shit, let's walk towards her and see if dropping my head slightly and looking sheepish will help". He did check in, I did glare at him, he did not sit, but immediately his off leash heel was perfect, tight, great about turn other then I stepped on my pant leg as it had slightly unrolled by then. Halt-perfect sit, focus and my dog had returned from space. Forward, right turn, fast, normal, right turn--slight moment of spaceiness, but he came back to earth in a nano second, and finished with a nice halt and yes, he sat.
At this point, I'm just happy to have made it, alive, through the off leash heel. Recall could be a different story as of late, he's been doing a little anticipation. Sit, wait, leave dog, walk and praying the entire way that Snookie has stayed put. Turn, exhale and THANK GOD!, he had stayed put and when I called it was the most awesome recall ever-fast, straight and close(we've been working on that part), but no sit. Hey, I can live with that part. AND, he's got the hand signal finish perfect, just a tip of my right hand to the right and he was super fast with a straight sit in the heel position! WOO HOO, we made it after a 2 year absence.
Of course, now groups are getting ready to go in, Herding 2nd and I have to show Cara. We did make it by the way with about 5 mins to spare. Back in for long sits and downs-one bedlington, one golden, 3 GSD's(big ones too!) and Moose on the end. Cut to the chase....he sat without even thinking of laying down for the world's longest minute and the down, heck that's his thing, though sorry folks, no feet in the air. I'm happy to report it was a Q. Only 3 of us qualified and granted the 182 sucked but I know what the issues were-tight leads and his ubber space cadet moment, but those are to be expected from him. I think I see some work in rally advanced to fix that.
Sigh, not only did we show dogs, but made a trip over to Ames after the weird groups and traded one Ancona drake for 5 new Ancona ducklings and yes, one gosling. White Embden. Almost came home with some call ducks and turkeys, but I had to draw the line somewhere.
Sunday, colder, wetter, no obedience and it was beyond cold. Did I mention cold and wet? Yes it rained. I don't think I've ever been that cold at a show in ages. Cy got pulled as he decided he didn't like the concrete and limped a little. Of course once he got home, he was fine. Drama Queen. Connor was BOV and while Alec was down in that ring, I got to show a lovely berner boy for Jeni and took BOW-he was a handful but it was fun. Let's see, Alec also took in a new client puppy, Rhodesian and took BOW. Cara easily BOB again. I sat and watched him show a lovely blue merle rough collie girl for Leslie-not sure what the judge wanted but ended up giving the WB, BOV, which wasn't Alec's pup. And as I sat, with blanket covering my legs. Had to send the Ms for warm socks. Still not warm and toes, no feeling. Guess time to do jumping jacks or run around-I debated on going into group with my privos and socks, jacket and sweatshirt, but decided to look like I actually should be in the ring. Didn't get my anywhere-Cara did well in group but just not Roger's type. But Connor was and another group placement- 3rd this time around.
And guess what, now it's raining. Really raining. Run to big tow, throw dogs in, throw grooming crap in, throw people in, crank up heater and head home.
By the time we got home I had to change into warm clothes, grab Bates, and run him down to catch is ride out to CO. Sorry it took us so long to get down to Iowa City but can't thank Penni and Jessica enough for being able to squeeze him in-hope he wasn't too much a pain for ya!
And with that, Moose and I are headed back to the drawing board or as Melinda and I talked yesterday, Heeling 101. I guess Phoenix is going back there too-though he didn't recover like Moose did.
And also, it's naked dog season here. Break from the shows while a few of the fourlegged kids redecorate my house in wall to wall hair. Oh and of course, Cora x Eddie kids due at the end of the week!

Where have all the flowers gone?
Seriously folks, I know they are out there, people are bragging about their dogs and doing this show and that show. Guess it's all talk and no action. Last three shows, almost no entries in smooth collies. Just venting I guess, that's okay, we'll just keep trudging on, just means that by the time there are decent entries, the brat puppy will be a pro.
Sigh...

Hey, Hey, Hey....
Melissa writes that Albert and Marshall are going to start some agility training now. To which I went, little Marshall? No way! Not little Marshall! Yes, Albert's boy is now a grand old 8 years young and ready to start being a dog trainer.
I now feel old. I remember you when you were ((()))) this big. And thank you for the photos--I can see his momma in his eyes. Sigh.

Quicky
Waterloo KC show this weekend. Saturday had us showing collies, treeing walkers, plotts, scotties, cardigans and I know I'm missing a breed somewhere! Oh that darn pemmie!
Connor BOS to the #2 dog last year. Cy WD for another easy point. Wish that people would get their tails in gear and get some class dogs and bitches entered-lots of dogs needing majors now. Oh and a puppy grp 4 for Cy too.
Cara the pem-BOB
Treeing Walkers-BOB(well the entry was all Trish's) and on to a Group 3!!
Plotts-BOB(again, Trish's dogs)
Scottie-BOB
CWC's-Meredith helped show class bitches.
Sunday was a little better. Connor BOV and a Grp 4. Cy WD for another easy win, though I might add, he is the silliest and most outgoing thing around-now to keep all fours on the floor.
Pemmie-BOB
Treeing Walkers and Plotts-BOB's again.
No scottie entered and it was a nice and easy show with an early trip home.
More later!

I'm in a rut
Now none of these girls are perfect, far from it. But it's scary when you look at them and they seem so similar. Guess' as to who they are?

Duh moments
Searching in the fridge for the tahini to finish the hummus, found the yogurt that the Hubby bought for the Tall Kid to take on our PA road trip. It's still good, just hidden behind all the eggs-duh.
Cy had a duh moment this week. Several really and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, he's a collie and blonde. He likes to snoop and walk at the same time. After extolling the virtues of his new dog, Tall Kid is explaining to me as we are switching dogs in the back yard, about how he knows his name, but just chooses when he'll respond to it. Klunk! The ubber smart puppy, ran his head into the side of the kennel door because he can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Later on he ran into the screen door I was holding open for him. Duh.
The worst on for me this week? Entering dog shows and there's a judge coming up that I love to show to with my cardigans. He and his wife have given our dogs multiple group placements. I entered the collie, entered my obedience classes, entered juniors. On the way home that evening, as entries closed that day, I went over the classes and DUH--forgot to enter my own dog to show!!! Now no cardigans to show this judge. RRRRR

Pupdate
The babies are doing great. Ringer's family will be out on Sunday to pick up the little whiner boy. He talks, mostly whines when you pick him up to cuddle. His new mom asked if his ears were up, I might have spooked her with my response. Which was-Oh thank goodness, NO! See, I'm very happy to send puppies home in ear tape and show the parents how to do it and I'm also more then happy to have ears still down at 10-12 weeks. Ears that go up early, in my opinion and experience only, have a narrower ear base, lighter cartilage and many times a smaller ear. Big fat ears take time to go up.
Bates will be flying the friendly skies in the next week or two and AnnaMae's family is road tripping it from WI in a week to pick her up. In the meantime the entire crew has been playing outside, a lot. They found the dog walk-which is set at puppy height, the tunnel, the hole EBD dug last spring, smashed my cup plant, the hostas, eaten the hyacintha, columbines, and lily of the valley. Yes, my shade garden took a hit this week. The chicken house is very interesting, the horses-not so much. And yes, they love getting the zoomies and racing around the entire front yard.
Talked to Kim(Monster's mom) and she's going to have to have shoulder surgery and won't be able to come up and review the troops before they head home. So Chalice aka the Princess and Penny will hang out here for the long term until we can meet up. Might I mention that Chalice is the first to figure out that you can jump on the small crate in their puppy area and then put your feet up on the edge of the xpen? Great, just great. So crate moved, another crate added, and the gang is now working on crate training, inside the crates, not on top.
We are gearing up for another round of dog shows too. So nice to have them within easy driving distance. What I originally thought was going to be a laid back easy weekend, is turning out to be chaos-treeing walkers, plotts, pems, collies, cardigans and then the fun match with a new dog. Did I mention that I didn't enter anything to show myself? Actually I did, the following weekend, but I have a feeling that might not go the way I want it to.
And for those interested, yes, we strongly believe that Eddie is the one hit wonder and Ms Cora is due around May 8th with puppies!!! Either that or she's swallowing a cantalope each day. Only 1/2 way there and she's HUGE! Tall Kid and The Ms are wishing for another Emmett(non-hairy version)-though I was also told this time around they will be making sure all the puppies can carry on conversations. Earplugs please!

I'm joining the trend
Tall Kid texts me and asks: What does a black cat stuck in a tree mean?
Me: I don't know, the employee is taking a sick day?(for those not in the know, Midnight the trusty barn cat is known as the Hubby's "employee")
Tall Kid: LOL. I think we are now breeding cardigan welsh corgi treeing cathounds.
Poor cat.

Chinese take-out and fast food
Like the one that goes...... "I had a duck, dog and chicken problem while you were gone"
Seems that Pete had to take out her being left behind frustrations on something and got the collie gang to join her. And Dove decided she wants to eat again.
Remember, I left Hubby with like 100 new chicks? It was hot, it was cold, it was damp. The laying chicks got moved into the guest bathroom, er, bath tub in their brooder. Had the space heater in there, all was well.
While Pete and Co, were out in the front yard digging under the poultry fence, Dove was learning how to pick locks. One of the white, possibly Pekin ducks but maybe an Ancona got pulled under the fence and greeted by the dogs-look who came for dinner!!! Enter Hubby to interrupt the dining pleasures, Dove on the other hand takes that moment to crash the gate, open the bathroom door and with a gleam in her eye, said LUNCH!
The joke is, while the dogs in the front yard were enjoying Peking Duck, Dove was having Chicken Nuggets.
We did lose the duck, lost about 8 or 10 chicks. One chick has no wing and lost part of the other but doing great. Needless to say, the new limestone blocks got installed quicking along the fence and the house chicks are now in Fort Knox-two x-pens, one cover and lots and lots of gates between them and the dogs. Oh and Dove, handcuffed and thrown in the clink aka the far back bedroom.
Sigh, what next?

I lost them!
Any how, the kids got kicked outside with collie babysitters about mid-afternoon. Alec said he gave in and could not handle their pleading to be set free any more. So the 5 babies took to the front yard. Note to self, reattach panel at bottom of front gate, Ringer can get his head under it. So much for collie supervision.
By 8pm when we brought the collies in, the babies were wiped out-Chalice has figured out the steps and is sitting right below Auntie Pete cuddled up with her sister Penny. I went and grabbed her, Penny and Bates. Figuring that the hole under the steps had eaten the other two, I went back out and called for the pup-pups, babies, hello???? Nothing. Shit, my front yard is HUGE, they could be anywhere.
The Ms in the meantime has been capturing toads and frogs for relocation to the creek from the duck pond. Not only had I had enough with the peepers singing but she had too. Silence!
I didn't lose Ringer and AnnaMae.
They were helping catch frogs in the chicken yard with the Ms. Ewwwww!
So forwarning to Ringer, AnnaMae and Bate's new families, they like iky stuff already!
Update on Puppy Picnic......
We'll eat around noonish. Simple grilled brats from the local locker and chips. If it's raining, not sure what we will do, says 60% chance right now. Very very informal, anyone who wants to stop over can. I'm going to try to do some temperment testing.
Babies will get microchipped the following weekend and then start heading out to their new homes. As most of you know, I prefer to wait till at least 9 weeks if not 10 or 11 to send puppies home. 8 weeks is just too young for me and not near enough time for the babies to develop some important social skills as well as being in the center of a fear period that for the unknowing new puppy owner, can cause severe issues later down the road.
Please drop me a line if you plan on coming over--if it rains, I want to be able to let you know if we are still grilling or not.

The handsome Mr Bates again, comedian through and through. He spends a lot of time rolling on his back.
Yeap, Bates, again.
Penny, Penny,..........Penny
Chalice having pinned and KO'd her brother is allowing Mother to referee, while Penny goes, um, toes, yummy.
Bates does look slightly alarmed at the size of the nose poking him, but need not worry. Connor adores puppies and little dogs and two minutes later laid down in the middle of the puppy pile while they chewed on his ears. Good Dog Connor!
Bates, again. He just begs to have his photo taken.
And this is why we call Chalice....the Princess. Not spoiled at all?

Pupdates
First up: Ringer-black and white male with brindle points. He is headed to a great home in NE!
Next up: The handsome Mr Bates. Though a nice show prospect, we've optioned for him to become a breed ambassador in CO. He'll be sitting beside his owners while they drive their morgans in competitive driving competitions.
Last but not least: Ms AnnaMae. A lovely black brindle girl with a spark of mischief, will be heading to WI in a few short weeks and live the life of luxuary as a retirement project.
It's hard to believe that they are almost ready to head to their new homes. Time is short but I'm so happy to have found some awesome new homes for them.
